Israel Strikes Lebanon Despite Iran Ceasefire Pause; Dozens Killed, Hundreds Injured
Israel launched a wave of devastating airstrikes across Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, killing at least 89 people and injuring more than 700, Lebanese authorities said, amid escalating regional tensions.
Lebanon’s Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine warned that the death toll is likely to rise as rescue teams continue to search for victims trapped under rubble. He described the situation as a “dangerous escalation,” citing more than 100 Israeli airstrikes targeting multiple regions, including Beirut, Dahiyeh, Bekaa, Mount Lebanon and southern areas.
“The needs are increasing, but the scale of the assault is also huge,” Nassereddine said, adding that civilians have borne the brunt of the attacks.
According to Lebanese officials, Israeli strikes also hit hospitals, medical centres and ambulances, further straining an already overwhelmed healthcare system.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier clarified that Lebanon would not be covered under the recently announced two-week ceasefire involving Iran and the United States.
The ceasefire, brokered after heightened tensions, includes a temporary suspension of US attacks on Iran and Tehran’s agreement to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has cautioned that upcoming talks scheduled in Islamabad on Friday do not guarantee an end to the broader conflict.
Meanwhile, global markets reacted to the temporary de-escalation, with oil prices dipping after US President Donald Trump announced the pause in strikes. Brent crude fell to just below $95 per barrel.
The latest escalation in Lebanon underscores the fragility of the situation in the region, even as diplomatic efforts continue elsewhere. (AJ)
