“Emotional Revival: 8th Muharram Procession Returns to Srinagar After 32 Years, Fostering Religious Unity”
Srinagar 27 July: Srinagar witnessed a momentous event as the 8th Muharram procession graced the city’s streets after a hiatus of 32 years. Thousands of mourners, draped in black attire, gathered to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
The Shia community welcomed the administration’s decision to permit the procession from 6 am to 8 am with immense joy and reverence. The traditional route, starting from Guru Bazar, passing through Budshah Kadal and M.A Road, and culminating at Dalgate, witnessed an ocean of mourners expressing their devotion and paying tribute to the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (a.s.).
Participants of the procession displayed exemplary discipline and decorum, adhering to the conditions set by the administration, which prohibited any anti-national or provocative activities and ensured smooth traffic flow.
The air resonated with prayers and elegies as the procession made its way through the historic city, reminding onlookers of the profound significance of this day in Islamic history. Men, women, and children walked together, united in paying their respects to Imam Hussain (a.s.), a revered figure in the Islamic faith.
Mayor of Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu, also participated in the historic 8th Muharram procession, showcasing the inclusivity of the event. Meanwhile, Shia clerics, scholars, and community leaders led the procession, emphasizing messages of peace, love, and unity.
Aga Syed Mujatba, Chairman of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian Darul Mustafa, expressed gratitude to the administration for granting permission and reassured the community’s commitment to abide by the law and promote harmony. Imran Raza Ansari, President of J&K Shia Association, hailed the occasion as a historic milestone, urging participants to carry Imam Hussain’s (a.s.) timeless message of sacrifice to the world, highlighting the procession’s significance in uniting people from all walks of life.
The administration’s careful timing of the procession in the early morning hours ensured minimal disruption to the public, allowing businesses, schools, and offices to function smoothly throughout the day.
The event marked a significant day for the Shia community, honoring Imam Hussain’s sacrifice, while also showcasing the importance of religious harmony and cultural heritage in promoting coexistence and mutual respect in our diverse society.
