Srinagar, Aug 18 : The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against a Budgam resident for allegedly attempting to influence an ongoing investigation by bribing the investigating officer.

The chargesheet was presented before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Srinagar, against Ghulam Ahmad Ganie, son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie of Mirgund, Budgam, in connection with FIR No. 28/2026, officials said.

According to the police, Ganie has been booked under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 228 and 229 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The case was registered following a written complaint alleging that Ganie, who is already facing investigation in connection with FIR No. 11/2021 of the EOW Kashmir, transferred Rs 10,000 to the bank account of the investigating officer handling the case.

Officials alleged that the transaction was intended to induce the officer to act in favour of Ganie and influence the course of the investigation.

Following receipt of the complaint, the EOW initiated a formal investigation and examined the allegations besides collecting relevant documentary and other evidence. The probe subsequently established the accused’s alleged involvement, officials said.

Based on the findings, the investigating agency prepared the chargesheet and submitted it before the competent court for judicial determination, officials added.

The EOW has meanwhile urged people to refrain from offering or paying bribes to public servants in return for any favour or service. It also appealed to citizens to report demands for bribes or other corrupt practices to the competent authorities.

The agency said public cooperation and timely reporting were essential to strengthening transparency, accountability and efforts to curb corruption.
