Shopian, 16 July: In a much-needed initiative, the Apple Farmers Federation of India (AFFI) has emerged as a new beacon of hope for apple growers in the Kashmir Valley. Under the slogan ‘Save Apple, Save Grower,’ the federation is determined to safeguard the Kashmiri apple industry and tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by growers from production to market selling.
The Kashmiri apple, renowned for its exceptional taste and quality, has encountered numerous hurdles in recent years. Climate change, pesticide infestations, limited access to modern agricultural practices, and lack of efficient market channels have all contributed to the plight of apple farmers. However, the AFFI signifies a promising prospect for these struggling growers.
Going beyond the production phase, the federation aims to address the post-harvest challenges that have long plagued the industry. They are determined to tackle issues such as storage facilities, transportation bottlenecks, and fair market prices to ensure that the hard work of the growers yields better returns.
During its inaugural two-day event in the Shopian District, which included a rally with growers from other districts, the AFFI welcomed delegates from the All Farmers Federation of India to engage in comprehensive discussions and speeches regarding the growing concerns about the fruit. Esteemed figures, including senior leader of the Communist Party of India M. Yousuf Tarigami, were present, underscoring the importance of this initiative.
Recognizing the vital role played by the apple industry in the region’s economic and cultural fabric, the delegates emphasized the significance of preserving this age-old tradition. They expressed confidence in the federation’s ability to bring about positive change for the growers.
In interviews with Arising State, growers expressed concerns about fruit spoilage during the harvesting season due to stranded loaded trucks, unchecked use of pesticides, unpredictable weather, including untimely rainfall and hailstorms, and low market rates. They expressed hope that the AFFI would provide a united platform to voice their concerns and raise pertinent issues with the government.
P. Krishna Prasad, Finance Secretary of the All Farmers Federation of India, stressed that Kashmiri growers, regardless of their political affiliation, share a common identity as cultivators of the land. He urged all growers to set aside political differences and unite for the preservation of their cherished fruit—the Kashmiri apple—and the prosperity of the apple industry.
“The challenges faced by growers are not confined to any particular region or party; rather, they resonate across the nation,” he added. “It’s crucial to recognize farmers first and foremost as individuals who toil to feed the nation, transcending political boundaries.”
The combination of stranded loaded trucks on the national highway, the government’s decision to lower import duties on Washington apples, and the absence of a minimum support price (MSP) for Kashmiri apples has created a tough environment for the apple industry in the valley. Surprisingly, some people mistakenly believe that tourism is the major player in GDP, when in reality, the horticulture sector holds a significantly larger share, contributing almost 9.5% to the GDP.
Gh. Nabi Malik, a senior Kissan leader, spoke to Arising State, stating that the AFFI initiative has successfully reached all apple growers and has been met with enthusiasm. He believes it will be instrumental in resolving issues related to apples. A gathering of 250 delegates from across the valley came to support the federation, fostering unity and cooperation among apple growers.
Malik further revealed that plans are underway to establish membership and block committees, as well as awareness programs at the village level, directly addressing the challenges faced by apple growers.
With momentum building, the federation is poised to become a key driving force in advocating for the rights and interests of apple growers in the valley. The success of this move will depend on the federation’s ability, and only time will tell whether it will prove to be a triumph for Kashmiri apple farmers or a risky endeavor.
