Top court says it is “pained” by allegations that judiciary is shielding accused; urges media restraint and fair reporting.

New Delhi/Bhopal: The Supreme Court on Monday strongly defended the integrity of the judicial process while hearing the high-profile death case of actor-model Twisha Sharma, observing that it was “slightly in pain” over allegations that the judiciary was attempting to shield the accused.
A bench led by the Chief Justice emphasized that the court had not expressed any opinion on the merits of the case and was committed only to ensuring a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation.
Twisha Sharma, 26, was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal on May 12. While the incident was initially treated as a suspected suicide, the case took a dramatic turn after her family alleged dowry harassment and raised doubts over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The controversy intensified following claims of inconsistencies in forensic findings, alleged suspicious phone activity, and questions regarding CCTV footage. Public outrage and protests demanding justice eventually led to calls for a CBI investigation.
During Monday’s proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government was willing to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Supreme Court welcomed the move and stressed that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.
The court also cautioned media organizations against conducting a “trial by media,” urging restraint in coverage and requesting that emotional statements from the victim’s family not be reduced to television “sound bites.”
Meanwhile, the accused husband, Samarth Singh, remains under investigation following his surrender before authorities earlier this week.
A second post-mortem examination has already been conducted, and investigators are now expected to focus on forensic evidence, digital records, and witness testimonies as the case moves toward a possible CBI takeover.
The investigation continues, and no final conclusion has yet been reached regarding the exactTwisha Sharma Death Case Likely to Go to CBI Amid Questions Over Probe cause of Twisha Sharma’s death
