Paratrooper Found Dead in Kokernag Snowstorm; Hunt Continues for Second Missing Soldier
Kokernag, Oct 09: The body of a paratrooper, who went missing during an anti-militant operation in the high-altitude region of Kokernag in South Kashmir, has been recovered, officials confirmed on Thursday. Preliminary reports suggest the soldier may have succumbed to an avalanche or snowstorm that struck the area three days ago.
Authorities said the soldier was found with his rucksack and service weapon, indicating he was actively engaged in the ongoing search and cordon operation when the tragedy occurred. The identity of the deceased has not been officially disclosed.
The incident reportedly took place when a team of paratroopers, operating in adverse weather conditions, was hit by a sudden snowstorm. Contact was lost with two personnel, triggering immediate rescue operations despite the challenging terrain and low visibility.
A senior Army officer said that search operations are continuing for the second missing soldier. “Despite rough weather and difficult topography, joint teams of the Army and police are working tirelessly to locate the missing personnel,” he said.
Officials are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident, even as security operations continue in the region to ensure there is no militant activity in the area.
