Pampore ,29 October: Despite the installation of sprinklers on some portions, there has been no improvement in saffron production this year in the Pampore town of Pulwama district.

The aggrieved farmers have said that their production remained very less yet again this year, due to which they are distressed.

They said that lack of irrigation has led a decrease in production as “sprinklers were installed in a few portions of the saffron land only”

One of the farmers has said that lack of borewells was the reason that saffron production witnessed a decline, leaving farmers dismayed.

He however believed that “if the borewells shall be constructed with the sprinklers, the production can be increased next year”

Another resident said that the National Saffron Mission was started a long time back, with the aim of increasing saffron production, however, it failed to bring any results for the farmers, so far”

He said that the government should have installed maximum borewells to witness a good production of saffron here, rather than installing sprinklers in only on some portions.

Sources said that dry weather has mainly led to a decrease in the production of saffron and added that borewells can play a vital role in maintaining production.

Meanwhile, an official has said that they are in the process to construct the borewells, with the help of the Mechanical department, till April next year. He assured that saffron will have a good future.
