Kashmir Freezes Under Sub-Zero Temperatures; Coldest Night of the Season Recorded
Srinagar, Nov 28: The Kashmir Valley experienced its coldest night of the season as temperatures plummeted below freezing across most parts of the region, officials reported on Thursday.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, a significant drop from the previous night’s minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. The temperature was 1.7 degrees below the seasonal average.
Qazigund, the gateway to the Valley, witnessed its coldest night this winter, with the mercury dipping to minus 3 degrees Celsius.
The popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, also a base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, registered a bone-chilling minus 5 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest location in the Valley. The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir reported minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag in south Kashmir was the only location where the temperature stayed above freezing, recording 0.2 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has forecast predominantly dry weather until Friday evening. Light rain or snow is possible at isolated locations in the higher reaches from December 1. Scattered precipitation may occur over two days starting December 2, with another dry spell expected from December 4-6.
The Valley’s residents are bracing for the increasing chill, with more sub-zero nights anticipated as winter deepens.
