Back-to-Back Earthquakes Shake North Kashmir; No Damage Reported

Srinagar, Aug 20: Back to back earthquakes of magnitude 4.9 and 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir today morning, National Center for Seismology said.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 6:45 am, with its epicenter located in the northern district of Baramulla. The quake’s coordinates were recorded at a latitude of 34.17 N and a longitude of 74.16 E, with a depth of 5 kilometers.

Another earthquake of 4.8 magnitude occurred at 6:52 IST.

The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometres at a longitude of 74.31 East and latitude of 34.20 North.

Although no immediate reports of significant damage or loss of life were received, one person in Baramulla was injured after jumping from a building in a panic during the tremors.

It is important to note that much of the Kashmir Valley, including the districts of Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar in the Jammu region, falls within Seismic Zone V, categorized as a very high damage risk zone by the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority.
