Statehood Now: Omar Abdullah Demands Action on Delhi’s Promise
UT Status Temporary, Local Jobs and Land Must Be Protected, Says CM
Budgam, Jan 2: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called on the Government of India to fulfill its promise of restoring statehood, reminding them of their commitment during the Article 370 hearings in the Supreme Court. “The Union Territory status is a temporary phase. It has been over a year since this assurance, and I believe ‘as soon as possible’ is long overdue,” Omar said at a press conference held at SKICC.
The Chief Minister stressed that respecting the people’s mandate remains the government’s primary responsibility. “The recent elections saw high voter participation, reflecting the people’s trust in the democratic process. It is now up to us to fulfill the promises made. While several issues have been addressed, many others will only be resolved with the restoration of statehood,” he said.
Omar Abdullah addressed concerns regarding the establishment of a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Pulwama, emphasizing that the agricultural land of locals would be safeguarded. “If the people of Pulwama do not want the NIT in their district, we are ready to shift it elsewhere. There are other districts eager to host this institute,” he stated.
Responding to a recent protest led by MP Syed Aga Rahullah over reservation policies, Omar remarked, “It is good that MP Rahullah exercised his democratic right to protest outside my residence. I now expect him to lead a similar protest in Parliament to push for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.”
The Chief Minister further highlighted his government’s respect for democratic rights and shared that a cabinet subcommittee has been set up to resolve reservation issues. “We have assured student delegations that a solution will be found within six months. Safeguarding local jobs is a priority to ensure opportunities are not taken away by outsiders,” he added.
Omar reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to protecting employment opportunities for locals. “Without proper reservation safeguards, there is a risk of outsiders dominating local jobs, which we are determined to prevent. The matter is also being reviewed by the High Court,” he pointed out.
The Chief Minister’s remarks emphasise the urgency of addressing the region’s pressing issues and his government’s resolve to protect local interests while ensuring the people’s voices are heard.
