Anantnag: Despite the government’s efforts to increase student enrollment in government schools in the Anantnag district, the initiatives have seemingly failed on the ground. Many schools have a significantly low number of students compared to the number of teachers assigned. Government schools have a significantly less roll of students and the teachers posted in schools are more than the students. Similarly, Sources said that there are several Government schools in Anantnag district where the student ratio is more than the teachers.

The Government Middle School in Now Wothoo Hanji Danter area of Anantnag district was established in 1974. Situated approximately 4 kilometers away from the bustling town of Anantnag, the school serves as an educational institution for the local community. The current situation at the Government Middle School in Now Wothoo Hanji Danter area is characterized by an unusual ratio of  4 teachers to 14 enrolled students . This indicates a significant disproportion between the number of teachers and the student population at the school.

According to official sources, it has been reported that in Anantnag district, there are Government schools with varying student-to-teacher ratios. Some schools have a significantly lower number of students compared to the number of teachers assigned to them, while others face the opposite situation with more students and fewer teachers.

‘This imbalance in student-to-teacher ratios highlights the need for rationalization of teachers in Anantnag district. By redistributing the available teaching staff more effectively, it is hoped that enrolled students can receive a better quality of education.

Furthermore, the decline in student enrollment in government schools has become a persistent problem in the district. This poses a significant challenge for the government’s efforts to sustain enrollment drives and retain students in government schools”,they said.

Added that the reasons behind this decline have sparked an ongoing debate, with various stakeholders discussing and examining who may be responsible for the downward trend in the student population.

Addressing these issues is crucial to ensure that government schools in Anantnag district can provide quality education to all enrolled students and effectively meet their educational needs.

Notably, the School Education Department started a massive enrollment drive to increase the student population in government schools in all districts. The move comes after several government schools in Kashmir witnessed a dip in student enrollment, sources said.
