Z-Mor Tunnel Opens New Doors for Sonmarg Tourism and Year-Round Accessibility: CM Omar Abdullah
Sonmarg, Jan 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underscored the transformative impact of the Z-Mor Tunnel on local residents and the tourism potential of Sonmarg, describing it as a game-changer for the region’s connectivity and development.
Speaking about the long-awaited project, the CM highlighted how the tunnel would improve accessibility, invigorate tourism, and enhance the quality of life for locals.
“We have been waiting for this tunnel for a long time. It will bring numerous benefits. People living beyond Z-Morh, who previously had to vacate the area during winters, can now stay year-round. Moreover, Sonmarg, which was once a seasonal tourist destination, will now welcome visitors in the winter months too,” he said.
The Z-Mor Tunnel is also set to significantly reduce travel time between Srinagar and Kargil-Leh, opening up new opportunities for trade and tourism. The CM expressed optimism about the completion of the Zojila Tunnel within the next 2-3 years, which he said would further simplify travel to Kargil-Leh and strengthen regional connectivity.
On the topic of the proposed stopover for the Delhi-Kashmir train at Katra, Abdullah acknowledged the importance of prioritizing passenger safety. “If the stopover is deemed necessary for security reasons, I don’t believe anyone should object. Ensuring the safety of passengers is paramount, and measures to prevent accidents or potential threats are crucial,” he remarked.
The CM expressed hope that railway authorities would make decisions that prioritize passenger safety while minimizing inconvenience, ensuring seamless travel experiences for all.
