Washington/Tehran/Jerusalem, June 21: United States President Donald Trump has announced that American forces have carried out what he called “very successful” strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities located in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, adding that all US aircraft have exited Iranian airspace following the mission.
The strikes come amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which began over a week ago. Israeli forces have been targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites, while Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes. Iran claims that more than 400 people have been killed and at least 3,056 others wounded since Israel launched its offensive on June 13. On the Israeli side, at least 24 people have reportedly been killed in Iranian counter-strikes.
Announcing the US involvement, Trump said the attacks were aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,” Trump said in a post on social media. “All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”
According to reports, the US deployed two B-2 stealth bombers for the mission, using a 30,000-pound bunker buster bomb designed to destroy deeply buried and fortified targets. US and Israeli officials have stated that only such weaponry could reach the heavily protected nuclear enrichment sites beneath the surface.
Trump also publicly criticized his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, rejecting her statement that there was no concrete evidence Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons.
In a follow-up message, Trump wrote, “This is an HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ISRAEL, AND THE WORLD. IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR. THANK YOU!” He added that he would be addressing the nation at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
The situation marks a significant escalation in Middle East tensions, with the direct involvement of the United States in a military confrontation targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
