Srinagar Police Busts Major Drug Racket, Seizes 8 Kgs of Heroin
Srinagar: In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Srinagar Police successfully intercepted a narcotics consignment and arrested two key traffickers, recovering 8 kilograms of heroin during a routine checkpoint at Barthana Crossing, Qamarwari.
The operation was conducted by a police team from Police Post Qamarwari. A suspicious Tata Sumo vehicle (Registration No. JK05D-1837) was stopped for inspection. Upon thorough search, 6 kilograms of heroin was discovered concealed beneath the driver’s seat. Additionally, 2 kilograms were found during a personal search of the suspects, hidden in polythene bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Anas Ajaz Awan, son of Ajaz Ahmad Awan, resident of Dildar Tangdar, Kupwara and Zahid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, resident of Channipora, Tangdar, Kupwara.
The narcotics and the vehicle have been seized as evidence. A case has been registered at Police Station Parimpora under FIR No. 03/2025, invoking sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
As per the SSP Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, Cross-Border Network is Suspected wherein Preliminary investigations suggest the heroin was smuggled from Pakistan as part of a cross-border drug trafficking network. The police are now pursuing both backward and forward linkages to dismantle the syndicate and identify all those involved in the illicit trade.
“The Jammu and Kashmir Police has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking. Citizens have been urged to cooperate in creating a drug-free society by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or by calling 112.” Said SSP Srinagar in a press conference.
