Seminar on World Water Day held in GDC Tral

March 22: Department of Zoology in collaboration with Department of Environmental Science, GDC Tral, on Monday organized a seminar on World water day titled “Valuing Water” in which five students of various semesters form Science and Arts streams of the college participated.

At the very outset, the Principal GDC Tral Prof (Dr. Bashir Ahmad Mir), faculty members and students present in the seminar took the pledge to save and conserve water.

The Seminar was formally initiated with the welcome adress by Dr. Shaheen Khurshid. In his brief adress he welcomed the whole gathering and thanked them for gracing the occasion by their presence.

The Seminar started with an inaugural address by Principal GDC Tral Prof (Dr) Bashir Ahmad Mir. In his address Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Mir, highlighted the role of water in our day to day life, need of water for human existence and how water acts as an elixir of life on earth.

He deliberated how humans have indiscriminately wasted this resource, particularly from the dawn of industrialization.

He also focused on sustainable water use and insisted that the audience take the pledge for the judicious use of water and safeguard and protect water resources for future generations.

Prof. Syeda Laila Khalid (Staff Secretary) mentioned how it is essential to conserve our precious water resources to make our society sustainable.

Similarly, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Shah (Head Department of Political Sciences), deliberated on how humans keep on wasting the water resources and what it takes to water conservation.

He pointed out that due to the inefficient use of water in various sectors like agriculture and industries, humans have created problems not only for their race but also for all other species living on the planet.

Dr Fayaz Ahmad Malla, HoD Environmental Science, spoke about the Sustainable development goals connected with water sanitation and hygiene.

He deliberated on governmental policies like Jal Shakti Abhiyan for water conservation.

He briefly highlighted how the green revolution had created the groundwater shortage in Punjab and Haryana and what measure could be taken to increase the groundwater recharge like rainwater harvesting.

He also highlighted the impact of climate change on water resources.

Dr Shaheen Khurshid (HOD Zoology) gave a power point presentation entitled as “Water Pollution & Cancer Train)” that reflected the impact of Non- judicious use of pesticides and fertilizers on Punjab water resources especially in Malwa region of Punjab.

He deliberated on the lethal impact of pesticides & fertilizers on human health, which has increased incidence of cancer cases in the region.

 

The students who spoke on occasion were Aijaz Ahmad Mir, Muntaha Javeed, Mir Sayer Mushtaq, Faheemul Wahid and Saqib Firdous.

Prof Masood Majaz Ganaie (Head,Dept. of Botany) and Prof K.Mubashir Qayoom (Head, Dept of Biochemistry) acted as the jury to evaluate the content and presentation of the speakers.

The jury announced Faheem ul Wahid as the winner and Aijaz Ahmad Mir and runner up of the Seminar.

Prof (Dr) Bashir Ahmad Mir distributed the mementoes and certificates among the participating students.

Dr Suhail Jeelani, Lecturer Department of Zoology presented the vote of tanks.

The Seminar culminated with a group photograph in front of Admin Block.
