Srinagar, October 4: Former Indian cricket coach and legendary player Ravi Shastri has expressed optimism about the future of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir, recognizing the region’s potential and the enthusiasm of its youth.

Shastri, who first played in Srinagar in 1987, spoke about the significant improvements in the local cricket scene and the passion of the community. Reflecting on the transformation since his last visit, he highlighted the growing interest in the sport and the increasing opportunities for young cricketers in the region. “There is immense potential here. The youngsters are full of talent, and with the right exposure, they can go far. Events like these, with legends present, serve as an inspiration for them,” he said while speaking to the media at the sidelines of a Legends League Cricket tournament.

When asked about Umran Malik, the local fast-bowling sensation who has gained national attention, Shastri praised his talent but advised him to stay dedicated in the face of stiff competition. “Umran has the talent, but he will need to remain focused and work hard. The competition is fierce, but with determination, he can achieve great success,” Shastri remarked.

He also shared his thoughts on the cricket ground, noting the improvements since his last match in the region 37 years ago. Shastri complimented the infrastructure, saying, “The ground looks good, and with some care for the pitch and the outfield, it can become one of the best in the region.”

The Legends League Cricket event has brought many former international stars to Jammu and Kashmir, giving local players valuable exposure and a chance to interact with seasoned cricketers. Shastri emphasized the importance of such events in nurturing local talent and boosting their confidence.

“Watching big players was always a thrill for us as youngsters. These tournaments allow local talent to dream big and aim for greater heights,” Shastri concluded, underscoring the role of these platforms in shaping the future of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir.
