Panthers Party observes 54th Students Martyrs’ Day

Jammu: The activists of National Panthers Students Union (NPSU), Young Panthers and National Panthers Party observed the 54th Anniversary of Student Martyrs at Memorial Site in front of GGM Science College, Jammu. The four students were martyred on October 17 & 18, 1966 by the brutal police firing of J&K Police. Three students Brijmohan, Gulshan Handa and Subhash Chand were gunned down in the full public view on the grounds of Gandhi Memorial Science College on October 17, 1966. Sardar Gurcharan Singh alias Pissu was martyred by the police in the Rajender Bazar on October 18, 1966 while students’ procession was going in protest against the killing of students on October 16 in the Science College Ground.

A strong delegation of student leaders from J&K met Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India and it was on her intervention that a Commission of Inquiry was ordered and a minister accused by the students was sacked in J&K.

        Mr. Bhim Singh, the then Chief Organiser of Students Congress and many others reached the memorial site now on the 54th Martyrs’ Day and paid salute to the student martyrs who were martyred by J&K Police while they were demanding the students’ genuine rights for J&K colleges.     

        Hundreds of student activists and others who had heavy tributes to students’ martyrs declared that it was the sacrifices of the students’ martyrs that the Govt. of J&K after a great struggle Jammu got full-fledged university, with Engineering Law Colleges of its own and students in Jammu province got legitimate their in the education with Jammu University also.

        The activists of Young Panthers, National Panthers Students Union and many other activists from the university and colleges paid heavy tributes to the students’ martyrs of 1966.  

The prominent among those included Prof.Bhim Singh (Chief Patron of Panthers Party) Mr. P.K.Ganju, Mohd. Iqbal Chowdhary (Vice-Presidents), Ms. Anita Thakur & Mr. Yashpal Kundal (General Secretaries), Mr. Bansi Lal Sharma, Advocate (Advisor-JKNPP), Mr. Pratap Singh Jamwal, Mr. Anil Rakwal,  Mr. Neeraj Gupta and others.
