Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Slams J&K Assembly Speaker Over Silence on Waqf Issue

Srinagar, Apr 7 : Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has criticized the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker for what he termed as a “shameful refusal” to discuss the issue of Waqf properties, calling it a betrayal of the public mandate.

In a strongly worded statement, Mirwaiz expressed disappointment that while Tamil Nadu, with only around 6% Muslim population, passed a strong anti-Waqf resolution in its legislative assembly, the speaker of the Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has failed to even allow a discussion on the matter.

It is ridiculous and condemnable that Tamil Nadu, with just 6% Muslim population, could pass a strong resolution against the Waqf Act, but here in J&K, the speaker is hiding behind technicalities and refusing to take up this deeply concerning issue for the Muslims of the state,” Mirwaiz said.

He reminded the Speaker that his party had been given a strong public mandate on the promise of protecting the rights and interests of the people, especially after the developments of August 2019.

The people expected their representatives to raise their voice on critical matters.

Why is the speaker capitulating so meekly?” he questioned. (KNS)
