MHA Approves Creation of Five New Districts in Ladakh to Enhance Governance
SRINAGAR, Aug 26: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the formation of five new districts within the Union Territory of Ladakh, aiming to improve administrative efficiency and bring government services closer to the local population.
The newly established districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—are expected to bolster governance and ensure that development benefits reach every corner of the region. This move is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance governance and provide better administrative support to the people of Ladakh.
Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his support for the initiative, stating, “The Modi government is dedicated to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh. The establishment of these new districts will ensure that the benefits meant for the people reach their doorsteps and strengthen governance across the region.”
He further emphasized, “In pursuit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the Union Territory. These districts will enhance administrative efficiency and service delivery, ensuring that governance reaches every nook and cranny of Ladakh.”
The creation of these districts is expected to facilitate better management of resources, improve infrastructure development, and address the unique challenges faced by different areas within Ladakh. By decentralizing administration, the government aims to provide more tailored and effective solutions to the local populace.
On August 5, 2019, Ladakh was separated from Jammu and Kashmir and designated as a Union Territory, allowing for more focused governance and development initiatives tailored to its distinct geographical and cultural landscape.
The establishment of the new districts marks a significant step towards realizing the government’s commitment to the sustainable and inclusive growth of Ladakh, ensuring that the region’s strategic and economic potential is fully harnessed for the benefit of its residents.
