Massive Traffic Jams Paralyze Srinagar City

Share

Srinagar, March 13: As the holy month of Ramadan progresses, traffic congestion in Srinagar has worsened, especially in the afternoons leading up to Iftar. Commuters struggle to reach their destinations on time, with some even breaking their fast while stuck on the road.

The chaos is particularly severe in areas like Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Batamaloo, and downtown, where vehicles move at a snail’s pace. Residents express frustration, saying they leave early but still get caught in prolonged traffic jams.

“It’s exhausting. By the time I reach home, I am drained. The authorities need to come up with a proper plan to manage this mess,” said Humaira Khan, a schoolteacher.

Traffic police face challenges due to a shortage of manpower and reckless driving by motorists. Violations like wrong-side driving, honking, and illegal roadside parking worsen the situation.

“People park their cars wherever they find space, causing bottlenecks. Some even double park, making it impossible for traffic to move smoothly,” said Faisal Ahmad, a shopkeeper in Nowhatta.

Street vendors encroaching on roads in areas like Batamaloo and Hari Singh High Street further contribute to the congestion. Locals suggest designating specific areas for vendors and implementing strict parking regulations.

With Ramadan continuing and the Eid shopping season approaching, traffic woes are expected to intensify unless effective measures are taken.
