Srinagar : Parts of the Kashmir valley woke up to the much-anticipated season’s first snowfall on Thursday, blanketing both north and south districts. Tourist hotspots like Sonamarg and Pahalgam experienced substantial snowfall of around 10 inches, setting the stage for the winter season.

The snowfall, varying across regions, was generally mild to moderate, with higher altitudes receiving heavy accumulation. Srinagar reported snow flurries in some areas, while Baramulla in north Kashmir also witnessed its first snowfall of the season, prompting authorities to deploy machinery to clear snow from the Narbal-Baramulla highway.

An independent weather forecaster noted on X (formerly Twitter) that light snowfall occurred in some plains during the early morning hours, while higher reaches recorded heavier spells. “Weather will remain dry over the next 12 hours, with chances of isolated rain and snow,” the forecaster stated, adding that mostly dry weather is expected for the coming week.

This snowfall has been a welcome sight for residents and tourists alike, marking the onset of winter. It brings hope for Kashmir’s agriculture, particularly its apple orchards, by kickstarting snowpack accumulation vital for irrigation. Meanwhile, the tourism sector is gearing up for an influx of visitors, with destinations like Sonamarg and Pahalgam now prime spots for winter adventures and scenic getaways.

The valley’s snow-covered landscapes have not only brought smiles to locals but also signaled the beginning of a promising winter season for agriculture and tourism.
