Kashmir Records Historic High Temperatures, Srinagar Logs Hottest Day in Over 70 Years

Srinagar, July 5: The Kashmir Valley is reeling under an intense heatwave, with multiple towns recording their highest July temperatures in decades. Srinagar on Saturday registered a maximum temperature of 37.4°C, making it the third-highest ever recorded since 1892, according to data from the Meteorological Centre and Kashmir Weather, an independent weather monitoring platform.

The current reading surpasses all but two historical temperature records for the city — 37.7°C on July 5, 1953, and the all-time high of 38.3°C on July 10, 1946. Saturday’s temperature is the highest in over 70 years, underlining the severity of the ongoing heatwave.

The heat has been equally severe elsewhere.

Kokernag, a popular hill station in south Kashmir, recorded 34.0°C, marking the second-highest July temperature in the region’s recorded history. The previous record of 34.1°C was noted just last year, on July 28, 2024.

Pahalgam, widely known for its cool climate and lush landscapes, touched a scorching 31.6°C, its highest-ever temperature recorded to date. The previous highest in Pahalgam was 31.5°C, observed on July 21, 2024.
