Kargil’s Lingering Discontent: Four Years After August 5 Decision

Share
Srinagar, Oct 09 : Omar Abdullah, the National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister, expressed concerns on Monday regarding the state of Kargil, four years after the significant decision of August 5, 2019. While initially, the people of Kargil celebrated this decision, he noted that the region has since become a hub of discontent due to a unilateral move by the Centre, leading to protests and political ramifications.

During a press conference in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah emphasized the persistent dissatisfaction. He stated, “The people of Kargil celebrated and distributed sweets on August 5, 2019, but after a year or so, and even now, people have held protests as they are unhappy with the decision that was taken unilaterally by the Centre. This discontent was evident during the Kargil Hill Council polls.”

This discontent has been evident, notably in the outcomes of the Kargil Hill Council polls, where the sitting BJP MP, who once enjoyed substantial support, is now facing significant backlash. Omar Abdullah expressed his belief that if Lok Sabha elections were held today, the incumbent BJP MP would face a resounding defeat, indicating widespread dissatisfaction.

He further highlighted that the situation in Kargil is still evolving, with many residents expressing their discontent through peaceful demonstrations and their choices in electoral processes.
