Srinagar, Jan 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir from January 26, with isolated heavy spells likely on January 27, officials said.

According to the IMD’s latest advisory issued by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the weather over the next 24 hours will remain generally cloudy with isolated light rain or snow at several places across the Union Territory.

The department said that on January 26 and 27, rainfall and snowfall activity is expected to intensify, with widespread precipitation across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

IMD has also warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph during this period. The advisory further cautions about possible disruptions in surface and air traffic, along with the risk of landslides, mudslides and waterlogging at vulnerable locations.

Weather officials said that maximum temperatures during the past 24 hours remained below normal in many parts of Kashmir and Jammu divisions, while minimum temperatures dropped sharply in higher reaches, with Gulmarg recording minus 10.2°C, the lowest in the region.

The department has advised people, especially those in hilly and landslide-prone areas, to remain cautious and follow official advisories during the active weather phase.
