From Drought to Delight: Snowfall Revives Kashmir’s Spirit

Srinagar : Kashmir has transitioned from parched landscapes to a winter wonderland with the season’s first snowfall, ending a prolonged drought that had left the valley grappling with water shortages and dry fields. The snowfall, spreading joy and optimism, has brought relief to farmers, residents, and the tourism industry.

Early Friday morning, dense fog gave way to a pristine white blanket of snow, signaling much-needed respite. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued snowfall over the next 24 hours, particularly in higher elevations, raising hopes for a robust recovery from the drought.

Farmers, who bore the brunt of the extended dry spell, are optimistic about the snowfall’s impact. “This snowfall is a blessing,” said Bashir Ahmad, a farmer from Shopian. “It will replenish groundwater, boost soil moisture, and fill reservoirs, ensuring water for spring crops.”

Across the valley, children ventured outside for snowball fights, while adults admired the serene transformation. Traditional kangris (firepots) were lit to combat the plummeting temperatures. For many, this snowfall also represents hope after months of curtailed water and hydropower supplies caused by the drought.

For the tourism sector, the snowfall is a game changer. Irfan Shah, a hotelier in Gulmarg, remarked, “Tourists come to Kashmir for snowfall. This event will draw visitors, especially with New Year celebrations around the corner.”

However, the snowfall has brought its share of challenges. Major routes, including the Sinthan Pass on NH-244, have been closed to vehicular traffic due to heavy snow accumulation, which officials say poses significant risks. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has suspended movement on the pass until the route is deemed safe.

“Public safety is our top priority,” an NHIDCL spokesperson said. “Snow clearance teams are monitoring the situation and will reopen the road when conditions improve.”

Travelers are advised to exercise caution as authorities work to clear key roads and ensure essential supplies reach snowbound areas.
