Fresh Snowfall Hits Razdan Pass, Temperature Drops in Gurez Valley

Bandipora, Oct 6: A fresh spell of light snowfall blanketed the Razdan Pass, the key gateway to Gurez Valley, on Monday, marking an early arrival of winter in the higher reaches of north Kashmir. The snowfall, though not heavy, dusted the mountain slopes of Razdan Top, signaling a drop in temperature and the start of the cold season.

Officials stated that while the Bandipora-Gurez road—an 84 km stretch connecting Gurez with the district headquarters—has not been disrupted by the snow, it is under constant surveillance due to the unpredictable weather. “We are keeping a close watch on the Razdan Pass stretch to ensure road safety and avoid any disruption,” a senior district official said.

The light snowfall has resulted in a noticeable dip in temperatures in Gurez Valley, which is known for its frigid winters. Local residents are already gearing up for the harsher conditions, stocking up on essentials and preparing for the challenges that come with the region’s extreme winter weather.

Despite the picturesque charm that the snow brings, concerns remain over the accessibility of the area. The Bandipora-Gurez road has been temporarily closed in past winters due to heavy snow and avalanches. Authorities are prepared with snow clearance teams and other contingency measures to keep the road open for as long as possible.

As winter settles in, residents of Gurez Valley brace themselves for months of isolation and intense cold, but the snow also brings the community closer together, with neighbors and families uniting to tackle the season’s challenges. With more snowfall expected, both the valley and its people are readying for a challenging winter ahead.(KNT)
