Early Snowfall Blankets Kashmir’s Upper Reaches; Rains, Winds Bring Chill to Plains
Srinagar, Nov 4 : The higher reaches of Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations Gulmarg and Sonamarg, witnessed a fresh spell of light snowfall on Tuesday, while rains and gusty winds swept across the plains, leading to a sharp dip in temperatures across the Valley.
According to the Meteorological Department, light snowfall was recorded in areas such as Gurez Valley, Razdan Top, Sonamarg, Gulmarg, Farkin Top, and Doodhpathri during the afternoon hours. The fresh flakes turned the mountain tops white, marking one of the season’s earliest snowfalls and delighting tourists and locals alike.
In Srinagar and several other low-lying areas, strong winds lashed the city for nearly an hour in the afternoon, followed by intermittent rainfall later in the evening. The showers intensified the winter chill, sending residents reaching for warm clothes.
Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, said the weather will remain generally cloudy on November 5, with chances of light to moderate rain or snowfall over higher reaches at many places in the Kashmir division and at scattered locations in the Jammu division, particularly from the evening of November 4 to early morning of November 5.
He added that dry weather is expected to return from November 6 and persist till November 15. “Both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to drop further from Wednesday onwards,” Dr. Ahmad said.
