Srinagar, Oct 21: In a tragic militant attack in Ganderbal district on Sunday evening, seven people, including a doctor from Budgam and five non-locals, were killed, while five others were injured. The attack occurred at a camp in the Gagangir area, where laborers and staff working on a tunnel construction project were stationed.

According to official sources, militants opened fire on the camp, killing two laborers instantly. Five others, including the doctor, succumbed to injuries later. Several others sustained injuries, and further details are awaited. The deceased include Gurmeet Singh from Gurdaspur, Punjab; Dr. Shahnawaz from Budgam; Anil Kumar Shukla; Faheem Nazir; Shashi Abrol; Mohd Hanief; and Kaleem. Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. Home Minister Amit Shah called the attack a “despicable act of cowardice” and promised that those responsible would face the harshest response from security forces. Shah expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also strongly condemned the attack, assuring the public that the perpetrators would not go unpunished. “Our brave personnel are on the ground, and they will ensure terrorists pay a heavy price for their actions,” he said, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and wishing for the injured to recover soon.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah referred to the attack as “dastardly and cowardly,” expressing concern for the injured, some of whom were transferred to SKIMS, Srinagar, for treatment. Abdullah extended condolences to the families of the victims.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the attack, labeling it a “senseless act of violence.” JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra expressed grave concern over the increasing attacks on non-local laborers and called for immediate government action to prevent such incidents. CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami echoed these sentiments, stating that the attack appeared to be a deliberate attempt to disturb peace.

JKPC Chairman Sajad Gani Lone also condemned the attack, describing it as an “insane act of madness,” and urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice.

The incident comes just days after a similar attack in Shopian, where the bullet-riddled body of a laborer from Bihar was discovered.

Meanwhile as per sources the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has now stepped in to investigate the Ganderbal attack. Further details are awaited on this .
