Defence Budget 2026–27 Strengthens National Security, Boosts Military Capabilities: Rajnath Singh
New Delhi,1st Feb : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the Defence Budget for 2026–27, presented in the backdrop of the successful Operation Sindoor, further strengthens the government’s resolve to build a robust and foolproof national security system.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Defence Minister welcomed the allocation of ₹7.85 lakh crore to the defence sector, describing the budget as a strong reinforcement of the security–development–self-reliance balance envisioned by the government.
In a post on X, Rajnath Singh said the enhanced capital outlay would significantly boost India’s military capabilities. He noted that over ₹2.19 lakh crore has been allocated under the capital head for the armed forces, of which ₹1.85 lakh crore is earmarked for capital acquisition—around 24 per cent higher than the corresponding allocation in FY 2025–26. He said modernisation of the armed forces remains a key focus of the budget.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to veterans and their families, the Defence Minister said an allocation of ₹12,100 crore has been made for the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), marking an increase of 45.49 per cent over the previous financial year’s budget estimates. He termed the enhanced allocation a clear testimony to the government’s resolve towards the welfare and healthcare of ex-servicemen and their dependents.
Rajnath Singh also congratulated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting what he described as an “excellent” budget under the guidance of the Prime Minister. He said the budget reflects public aspirations and lays a strong foundation for achieving the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.
Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Singh said, India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation continues to gain momentum. He described the budget as a “Yuva Shakti–driven Budget” that aims to transform aspirations into achievements and potential into performance.
Inspired by the three national ‘Kartavyas’, the Defence Minister said the budget seeks to accelerate economic growth, fulfil public aspirations, and ensure meaningful participation for all sections of society. He added that the measures announced would promote manufacturing, strengthen infrastructure, and ensure that the benefits of growth reach the poor, underprivileged, and disadvantaged. (PIB)
