Brenpathri Tral Residents Stage Silent Protest Over Power Tariff Hike
Tral, July 25: Residents of Brenpathri village in Tral on Thursday staged a silent protest outside the local office of the Electricity Department, voicing their concern over the sudden hike in electricity bills.
The protesters, largely belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, said the monthly electricity charges had been increased from ₹520 to ₹780, which they termed unaffordable given their poor economic background.
“We are unemployed and belong to economically weaker sections. We cannot afford to pay this increased amount. We request the government to intervene and ensure justice for our community,” said one of the protestors.
The aggrieved residents held placards and stood peacefully, demanding an immediate rollback of the increased charges. They alleged that despite being a tribal-dominated and underprivileged area, no relief has been provided to them in terms of utility billing.
When contacted, the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Electricity Department assured the protestors that the matter would be looked into.
