J&K Likely to Witness Widespread Rainfall This Week; Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Jammu Division
Srinagar, July 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir over the coming week, with heavy to very heavy rain likely in parts of the Jammu division from July 28 onwards, raising the risk of landslides, flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, scattered light rain and thunderstorms are expected across Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, while weather activity is likely to intensify thereafter, with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over the subsequent days.
The weather office has issued no warning for July 26 and 27. However, from July 28 to August 1, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely over the Kashmir division.
For the Jammu division, the IMD has warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds between July 28 and August 1. The department has also cautioned against the possibility of landslides, mudslides, shooting stones, flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable areas during this period.
The department has advised residents, particularly those living in vulnerable and hilly areas, to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall.
During the past 24 hours, widespread light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms was recorded across the Union Territory. Udhampur recorded the highest rainfall at 44.2 mm. Maximum day temperatures remained 6-10°C below normal in many parts of Kashmir and 1-7°C below normal across most parts of Jammu. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 21.5°C, while Jammu registered 32.2°C.
For Monday, the local forecast predicts a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of very light rain or thundershowers in Srinagar, with temperatures expected to hover around 28°C and 19°C. Jammu is likely to experience a generally cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers and temperatures around 33°C and 27°C, respectively.
