IFC Kashmir Issues Flood Advisory as IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall in South Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control (I and FC) Department, Kashmir, on Monday issued a public advisory warning of the possibility of flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels across South Kashmir after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a strong spell of rainfall over the Jhelum Basin on July 21.

According to the advisory, the IMD has forecast 50–100 mm of rainfall in Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian during the morning of July 21, followed by another spell of lower-intensity rainfall on the morning of July 22.

The department warned that the expected rainfall could trigger flash floods and cause a rapid rise in water levels in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, particularly in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir. Water levels in the major tributaries and the River Jhelum are also expected to rise.

The I and FC Department has advised the public, particularly residents of South Kashmir, to avoid venturing near water channels, khuls, nallahs, rivers and other flood-prone areas, especially in higher reaches and hilly regions.

People have also been urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel through vulnerable and flood-prone locations, and take all necessary precautions to prevent any loss of life or property.

Residents of low-lying areas have been asked to remain vigilant and keep themselves updated with the latest weather forecasts and flood advisories issued by the authorities.
