Srinagar, Dec 17: Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), G.N. Itoo, has pledged to bring government schools on par with private institutions by focusing on quality education, infrastructure development, and curriculum modernization.

“Our priority is to improve school infrastructure, enhance teacher training, and align the curriculum with modern standards,” Itoo said. He emphasized the importance of creating a competitive educational environment where government schools can set new benchmarks.

Improving education in remote and underprivileged areas is a key focus. Itoo highlighted efforts to build classrooms, provide digital learning tools, and ensure teacher availability in these regions. “We are offering scholarships, free uniforms, and textbooks to ease the financial burden on families,” he noted.

Restoring parents’ trust in government schools is also a significant goal. Itoo revealed that improved infrastructure, teacher availability, and extracurricular programs have already encouraged many teachers to enroll their own children in government schools.

Addressing concerns about high fees and book costs in private schools, Itoo stated, “We are actively monitoring and addressing complaints. Schools violating norms will face strict action.” He stressed that education should not be profit-driven and called for collaboration among teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure holistic student development.

Accountability is crucial for improving education quality, according to Itoo. “We are closely monitoring the performance of teachers and administrators to ensure punctuality, dedication, and safe learning environments. Parents also have a role to play in supporting their children’s education,” he said.

He praised the New Education Policy (NEP) as a transformative initiative for Kashmir’s education system. “The NEP emphasizes skill development, creativity, and career-building. We aim to implement this policy across government and private schools, equipping students with modern knowledge and life skills,” he said.

Infrastructure remains a challenge, especially in flood-prone areas. However, Itoo assured that resilient school structures, along with science labs, libraries, and upgraded classrooms, are being developed to create better learning environments.

“Our goal is to ensure equitable education and set a standard for excellence in both urban and rural schools,” Itoo concluded. (KNS)
