J&K Bank Fraud: Shopian Police Begin Probe, Arrests Anticipated In Coming Days

Srinagar Nov 26: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have formally registered a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the large-scale scam at the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at Turkawangam, in Shopian district.

According to the Arising State  few arrests are anticipated in the coming days, as per the police. The case stands registered under FIR number 104/2024 at Zainapora Police Station, after a series of fraudulent withdrawals came to the fore in August this year created uproar in the area. 


The curtains about this massive fraud were raised when the account of one customer Mohammad Yousuf Shah was emptied, after his death.

The fraud came to the limelight after his daughter Zarifa alleged that approximately Rs. 5 lakh were transferred to multiple bank accounts associated with Mudasir Hassan Shah, a local resident.

Another person Abdul Ghani Lone, reported that an unauthorised withdrawal of Rs.1.77 lakh has taken place from his account. Further investigations into the case revealed a more organised pattern of financial irregularities. 

Subsequently, customers from the surrounding villages also discovered their accounts had been systematically emptied.

The bank has so far attached a senior employee suspected of involvement in the fraudulent activities while transferring other subordinate officials to other branches, as part of punishment.

However, a local lawyer, Advocate Mohsin Nabi filed a complaint under Section 316(5) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to a report, the police have confirmed that the investigation was progressing comprehensively, with multiple arrests expected anytime soon.
