J&K Assembly Pays Tribute to Late Leaders, Including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Pranab Mukherjee
Srinagar, Nov 05: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly convened a solemn session today to honor the memory of several prominent leaders, including separatist figure Syed Ali Shah Geelani, former President Pranab Mukherjee, and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
The session, led by the Assembly Speaker, included obituary references for various figures who had passed away since the last legislative session in February 2018. Among those remembered was Geelani, a three-time representative of the Sopore constituency (1972, 1977, 1987) in the J&K Legislative Assembly. Geelani, a towering presence in J&K politics, turned to a separatist stance in 1989 amid rising militancy, boycotting elections until his death in 2021.
The Assembly also paid respects to former J&K Governor Jagmohan Malhotra and BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana. These leaders, along with others honored in the session, were acknowledged for their contributions to Jammu and Kashmir and the nation.
The session concluded with leaders paying tribute, reflecting on the diverse and complex political legacy of the region.
