Veteran Industrialist Ratan Tata Passes Away at 86, Nation Mourns

Mortal remains to be kept at South Mumbai's NPCA

Mumbai: Veteran industrialist and Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata, passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 86. He breathed his last at Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai, where he had been admitted in recent days. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the news of his passing.

Ratan Tata, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, was hailed as a visionary business leader who transformed Tata Group into a globally renowned conglomerate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over Tata’s demise, describing him as a “visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata will be accorded a state funeral.

Tata’s mortal remains will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai on Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm for the public to pay their respects. The Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on October 10, with flags flown at half-mast and all government events in Mumbai cancelled.

Leading industrialist Anand Mahindra expressed his grief, stating that it was hard to accept the absence of Ratan Tata, whose work significantly contributed to India’s economic growth. Several prominent figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, have also paid their tributes.

As a mark of respect, Marine Drive has been closed beyond Oberoi hotel to facilitate the transportation of Ratan Tata’s mortal remains.
