Srinagar, August 22: In response to the recent concerns over the M-pox viral infection, the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), a premier tertiary care hospital in Kashmir, has proactively established an isolation facility. Initially set up with a bed capacity of six, the facility can be scaled up to accommodate 30 patients if the situation escalates.

According to a statement released by SKIMS, the hospital administration is on high alert and has implemented several measures to address potential challenges posed by the virus. Alongside the isolation facility, SKIMS has enhanced its testing capacity and devised treatment modalities in line with the latest recommended guidelines. Additionally, a dedicated control room has been set up specifically for the management of M-pox cases.

To ensure seamless communication and support, SKIMS has also established a 24/7 helpline center. The helpline can be reached at 0194-2403679 and is intended to assist both healthcare professionals and the general public with information and guidance related to M-pox.

In an effort to prevent the spread of the virus, SKIMS has developed comprehensive guidelines for healthcare workers, particularly those stationed at critical entry points such as airports and railway stations. The hospital has also ensured that there are adequate stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks, surgical gloves, and other essential gear.

In addition to these precautionary steps, SKIMS is preparing to release a detailed advisory for the public. The hospital’s experts plan to educate the community about M-pox through awareness campaigns across various social media platforms and other channels.

During a recent review meeting, Director SKIMS, Dr. M. Ashraf Ganie, was briefed by a team of experts on the current situation and the preparedness measures undertaken by the hospital. The team included notable figures such as Prof. Shariq Masoodi, Dean of the Medical Faculty at SKIMS, Prof. Irfan Rabbani, Principal of SKIMS Medical College, Dr. Farooq A. Jan, Medical Superintendent at SKIMS, Prof. Bashir Fomda, Head of the Microbiology Department, and Prof. Aijaz Nabi Koul, Head of Infectious Diseases.

The SKIMS administration reassured the public that they are fully prepared to handle the situation and will continue to monitor developments closely.
