Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Emphasizes Role of Masjids in Social Reform and Unity
Lays Foundation Stone for Masjid in Srinagar
Srinagar, Aug 08 : Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq highlighted the crucial role of masjids as centers for social reform and community activities, in addition to being places of divine worship. Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony for the renovation of the historic Haji Abdul Salam Qalandar Sahib Masjid in Srinagar’s Kadal area, Mirwaiz Farooq urged that masjids should follow the example of Masjid-e-Nabwi (SAW), which served as both a model for an Islamic state and a movement for social transformation.
He emphasized that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) laid the groundwork for eradicating pre-Islamic superstitions and customs, transforming Arab society. Mirwaiz Farooq called on the people of Kashmir to ensure that mosques remain inclusive and open to all Muslim sects and communities, fostering unity.
He also stressed the need for including spaces for women in new mosques to enable their participation in worship and educational activities. Additionally, he underscored the importance of establishing religious schools or madrasas alongside every masjid to educate the younger generation in both contemporary and religious sciences.
Mirwaiz Farooq highlighted the rising issue of drug addiction among the youth, expressing concern over the severity of the problem. He called for a renewed social reform campaign and emphasized the responsibility of masjid imams, preachers, and local committees in actively working to prevent youth from falling into drug addiction.
During his visit to the Kadal area, his first in six to seven years, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq received a warm welcome from a large crowd, including men, women, children, and especially the youth, who greeted him with enthusiasm and affection.
