Shopian militant killings trigger clashes in south Kashmir:Train service suspended

The killing of two militants during a gunfight with the security forces in Imam Sahab area of Shopian in south Kashmir on Friday triggered violent clashes.

According to reports youth took to streets and clashed with the forces near the gunfight site in Adkhara village.

Reports of clashes were also received from Lal Chowk, Reshi Bazar and Old Town areas of Anantnag following rumours of the killing of a local militant in the Shopian gunfight.

An official said two militants were killed in a gunfight in Adkhara early today after the army, police and the CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in the area.

He said the identity of the slain militants was being ascertained.

Meanwhile,the railway authorities on Friday suspended train services from Srinagar to Banihal and vice versa following apprehensions about the disturbance in “law and order” situation following a gunfight in Shopian district of south Kashmir. “It is a precautionary step,” a railway official added.
