Hi-tech Poly-houses by NRLM, Agriculture turn fruitful for Tral women

Pulwama: The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) in collaboration with Agriculture department in Tral sub district have established hi-tech poly houses in a bid to increase the vegetable production in the area & to generate the job opporunties for local women.

As per the officials, NRLM in collaboration with the department of Agriculture have established Poly-houses at Diver and Arigam villages of Tral, wherein the different kinds of vegetables are being cultivated by a group of local women, who are working under NRLM flagship programme.

The officials called it a great step towards increasing vegetable production in the sub district, besides employment opportunities for women, as the greenhouses are operating impeccably.

One of the NRLM officials has said that, “Around 17 women from Tral villages are engaged in vegetable cultivation at these poly-houses, and have been selling vegetables to earn profit, with one of the poly-houses established recently at Arigam to expand the business.”

He said that near about 10,000 women of Tral sub district are actively working at different units of NRLM to earn money, besides gaining experience.

One of the NRLM members named Sajida has said that she is working under this flagship programme for six years, and is successfully operating her Mushroom Unit and a Poly-house now to earn her livelihood.

She said that NRLM gives many opportunities to women, through which they become self-dependent by establishing their own business units.

“In my village, around 30 women were earlier associated to NRLM. Nowadays, more than 100 women are working at several NRLM business units, particularly in poly-house, dairy sector, and Mushroom units,” Sajida said.

The members said that Internal Community Resource Person (ICRP) team had earlier conducted a training cum awareness program at Tral, through which they came to know about such schemes.

Pertinently, “Polyhouse farming is a type of agriculture where crops, especially vegetables, are grown in controlled environmental conditions.” The farming offers many benefits over traditional farming methods, including the ability to control the temperature, humidity and amount of light that the plants receive.
