Shopian, 22 July :  In an ambitious effort to address the long-standing traffic congestion that has plagued Shopian Main Town for decades, the District Administration has taken a significant step to halt and close the SUMO service within the town limits.

The decision comes after years of grappling with escalating traffic issues in the area, where the increasing number of SUMO vehicles has worsened the problems. Commuters and local pedestrians have expressed their concerns about the initiative, hoping it will ease the traffic congestion in the bustling commercial and residential hub, which has had adverse effects on daily life and commerce in the region.

Under this new initiative, SUMO services will be replaced with efficient magic mini vans operating exclusively within the congested commercial areas of the town. District Administration officials announced the plan, stating that SUMO services originating from Kulgam or Pulwama will be restricted to operate only on the outskirts of Shopian town.

This strategic move aims to streamline traffic flow and alleviate overcrowding in the heart of town. A few months ago, a municipal park was transformed into a car parking site to mitigate the acute scarcity of parking spaces along busy roads. While this initiative has shown some benefits, locals argue that it has not completely resolved the persistent issue of traffic jams and crowded marketplaces.

Speaking about the comprehensive plan, DC Mr. Faz Lul Haseeb emphasized their commitment to finding effective solutions to the town’s long-standing traffic issues. He stated that the initiative is a response to the feedback received from the local community, and they are optimistic that it will significantly address the traffic congestion issues. The district administration aims to provide viable alternatives and improved parking solutions to create a more comfortable and accessible environment for all.

One of the magic mini drivers welcomed the decision but also voiced a note of caution, emphasizing the importance of strict enforcement to prevent SUMO vehicles from entering the main town. He believes that unrestricted SUMO operations within the town will undermine the effectiveness of the initiative.

Another driver, Mohd Rafi Bhat, shared his perspective, appreciating the efforts to improve traffic conditions but raising concerns about the fare of Rs 5 per passenger. He pointed out that rising fuel costs and operational expenses have made it difficult for them to make ends meet. The drivers appealed to increase the fare to Rs 10 per passenger to provide them with a more reasonable income, enabling them to meet expenses and sustain their livelihood.

As the District Administration continues its mission to curb traffic congestion and modernize transportation within Shopian main town, the people eagerly anticipate a smoother, more efficient, and congestion-free market experience, heralding a new era of progress and development in the region.
