Shopian, 12 July : With the installation of rooftop farming on his terrace, Haroon Rashid, a visionary farmer from Vehil area of Shopian District, has elevated agriculture to a whole new level. His innovative approach to cultivating organic produce without harmful pesticides has not only transformed the farming practices of his own family but also inspired others seeking sustainable agricultural solutions.
Rooftop farming, a relatively novel technique in the area, utilizes rooftop spaces for cultivating a diverse range of crops. Haroon’s pioneering venture has showcased the immense potential of this method, providing a practical answer to the challenges faced by traditional agriculture and opening doors to urban farming.
Embracing the principles of organic farming, Haroon Rashid’s rooftop farm implements techniques such as composting, crop rotation, and companion planting to maintain a healthy ecosystem for his crops. He firmly stands against the use of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers, prioritizing the health and sustainability of his farming practices.
Keeping his farm organic ensures that it produces fresh, nutrient-dense produce that is free of harmful chemicals, he said.
When discussing his journey, Haroon Rashid emphasized the importance of sustainability and environmentally friendly farming practices. As land resources are limited, it is crucial to explore alternative methods of growing food, he stated. “Rooftop farming not only maximizes space but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and storage. Taking this step will lead to a greener, healthier future.”
Guided by the Agriculture department, Haroon Rashid successfully transformed a 40 by 42 ft rooftop into a thriving agricultural haven, cultivating a wide range of crops without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. This terrace farm showcases an impressive array of crops, including Capsicum, Cabbage, Red Cabbage, Kala Zeera, Lemon Bam, Saffron, Pipli, Burgenia, and various hybrids.
One of the most noteworthy aspects of Rashid’s terrace farm is its organic nature. By eliminating the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, Rashid ensures that his crops are not only healthier but also environmentally friendly.
Rashid’s organic terrace farming has not only provided him with a sustainable source of income but has also demonstrated that agriculture can flourish even in limited areas by utilizing unused spaces. This offers opportunities for urban residents to engage in food production and contribute to a more self-sufficient and eco-conscious society.
In addition to environmental benefits, Rashid mentioned that he has successfully generated a sustainable income, with annual earnings ranging from 7500 to 1 lac.
Faisal Bashir, Agriculture Extension Assistant in Vehil Shopian, mentioned that the area is renowned for its thriving apple orchards; however, concerns about the excessive use of pesticides and other chemicals have raised questions regarding the environmental impact and long-term sustainability of traditional farming practices.
“Collaborating with farmer Haroon Rashid, the agriculture department initiated rooftop farming on his terrace, which served as a successful pilot venture,” said Faisal Bashir. “Encouraged by its positive outcomes, the department has expanded the initiative to establish 15 terrace farming plots across the district.”
The agriculture department’s support has played a pivotal role in driving this transformative change in Shopian district. The successful terrace farming has the potential to revolutionize farming practices, promote sustainable agriculture, and preserve the natural beauty of the region.
