Unprecedented Tragedy Strikes Dal Lake: Thousands of Fish Found Lifeless, Experts Blame Thermal Stratification

Share

Srinagar, May 26 : In a devastating blow to the world-renowned Dal Lake in Srinagar, an alarming sight has left residents and experts bewildered. The lifeless bodies of thousands of fish have surfaced on the lake’s shimmering waters, creating a haunting scene. Shocked locals reported the unsettling discovery, describing the presence of a pungent odor near a spring within the lake.

Fisheries department officials have swiftly responded, pointing to thermal stratification as the likely cause of this ecological catastrophe. Thermal stratification refers to a temperature variation that occurs at different depths within a body of water, disrupting the delicate balance of the lake’s ecosystem.

Addressing the distressing situation, an official from SKUAST-K expressed concerns over a potential decline in oxygen levels as a result of pollution and increased weed growth. These factors can significantly deplete oxygen concentrations, thereby leading to the unfortunate demise of aquatic life. Notably, similar incidents have occurred in the past, with Nigeen Lake also falling victim to such dire consequences.

As the authorities scramble to assess the full extent of the damage, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address environmental concerns and safeguard the fragile ecosystems that define our natural heritage.
