Heavy snowfall throws life out of gear in valley

Overnight Heavy snowfall lashed the valley, throwing life out of gear on Wednesday as the meteorological (MeT) department forecast improvement in weather from tomorrow.
The snowfall across Kashmir has cut the power supply to the majority of areas in the Valley, including Srinagar as transmission lines and poles have got damaged extensively.
Talking to news agency KNO Chief Engineer of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Aijaz Ahmad Dar said that at least 60 per cent damage has occurred across Kashmir due to fresh snowfall.Dar said men and machinery have been pressed to restore the electricity adding the restoration process is likely to be completed by 02:00pm this afternoon.Dar further said that the restoration would take a bit longer in southern areas because of the huge damage by snowfall.
The fresh snowfall has also resulted in closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway and cancellation of flights to and from Srinagar international airport. Train service between Banihal and Baramulla also remained suspended, due to snowfall.
Meanwhile ,snowfall has also resulted in causing damages across the valley ,reportedly two Towers damaged of Budgam-Nowbugh line 132 KV feeding Nowbugh, Chadoora Grid Station.
Over two ft of snow has accumulated on the ground in the plains of the valley while the higher reaches in Jammu and Kashmir received nearly four ft of snow during the last 48 hours.
Meanwhile, Timely action by District Administration Kulgam saved six members of a family in Tangmarg Aharbal, after their house got damaged due to heavy snowfall.
The family has been accomodated in a nearby shelter and blankets, essential items provided to them.
Reports say that Transmission tower of PDD, collapsed at Balhama, Srinagar, due to snowfall, damaging two parked vehicles.
Many Shikaras got submerged at the world-famous Dal Lake amid heavy snowfall in Srinagar on Wednesday.
At least half a dozen Shikaras got submerged at Dal Lake due to heavy snowfall in Srinagar.In the incident, no loss of life or injury has been reported, they said, adding that the locals as well as officials are on job to dewater the Shikaras.
In another incident a lady was injured after a shed collapsed due to heavy snowfall in Achan village of Litter Tehsil in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. An official has confirmed the incident to KNO and said that lady is being treated at district hospital Pulwama and roads are being cleared in the area.
