Government Degree College Tral Celebrates Wildlife Week

Tral,October 09 : The Department of Zoology in collaboration with NSS Units of Govt. Degree College Tral celebrated Wildlife Week from 2nd October to 8th October 2021, in which students and faculty from various streams participated.

The week long activities began with the session on 5th of October, 2021 in which students were sensitized about the need of conservation of wildlife by involving them in various activities like essay writing on different dimensions of wildlife, Painting Competition & Quiz.

The programme started with the Inaugural address by Prof. (Dr.) Muhammad Farooq Mir (Principal GDC Tral). He formally welcomed all the participants and motivated the organizers.

He discussed about prevailing threats to wildlife and the measures needed to be taken for conservation of Wildlife. Principal also briefed the gathering about the multiple ways in which Wildlife benefits humans.

The worthy Principal congratulated & appreciated the efforts of the Department of Zoology for conducting such event.

He also reiterated that it is the perfect setting to educate, counsel and aware the young generation about the importance of wildlife in stabilizing ecosystem.

Prof. Syeda Laila Khalid (Assistant Professor English) gave a brief & simple introduction of Wildlife & exploitation it faces in the hands of man.

She threw light on consequences of Human Wildlife conflict & the measures needed to safeguard wildlife.

On 7th October 2021, Special lecture series was organized in which faculty members of Department of Zoology as well as some students delivered informative presentations.

Dr Shaheen Khurshid (HOD Zoology) shared informative presentation explaining the conservation aspects of Wildlife and threats it faces globally.

He engaged the gathering by showing slides on the legislations involved in protecting wildlife. He substantiated his argument with the examples of some celebrities allegedly involved in illegal hunting & poaching.

He concluded his presentation by sharing some effective remedies through which we can conserve wildlife.

A very insightful presentation was delivered by Dr. Shahid Hussain (Lecturer Zoology) on “Forests & Livelihood”. He deliberated on how closely wildlife is connected to humans. He went on to explain the values of Wildlife & Forests.

Some wonderful oral presentations were given by students of various semesters like Fahiem-ul-Wahid of 4th semester, Shahid Shabir of 4th semester & Aqsa Rafiq of 3rd semester in which they highlighted the importance of wildlife, threats faced by it & status of Rhino conservation globally.

As part of the celebration of wildlife week, a Green March was organized by Department of Zoology on 8th of October 2021 from College Campus to Bus Stand Tral crossing.

The Purpose of this rally was to create environmental awareness and to generate momentum among the general public about the importance of Wildlife week.

The rally comprising of students, faculty members, non teaching staff and conservation conscious citizens was flagged off by Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Khanday (HOD Physics) at College campus.

About 150 students participated in eco-march. At the end of rally, Prof. Shakeel applauded the involvement of students in this rally & described its importance in the awareness it can bring among masses. He motivated students to participate in such rallies in future.

The event was moderated by Prof. Muhammad Abid Shah (Assistant Professor Chemistry) & Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Shaheen Khurshid (HOD Zoology).
