A peep into the incident of ‘suicide’ & its aftermath in Anantnag

Anantnag 13, Tuesday: The gruesome incident in which a young woman in her thirties committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district sent shock waves throughout the valley last week.

Soon after the incident took place the anger brewed, deceased woman’s family set the house of her in-laws on fire in a fit of rage alleging that the in-laws of their daughter had forced her to take the extreme step.

The horrific incident which Anantnag witnessed last Saturday shocked the whole district after the scary pictures of the burning house went viral on social media. The incident happened hours after a woman (name withheld), who was a resident of chelan Chawalgam area of Kulgam was found hanging on a ceiling fan inside her in-law’s house namely Gul Mohammad Misgar here in Moominabad area of Anantnag District.

Arising State reached out to the family of the deceased woman. As per the family members of the deceased woman, there was a dispute between the couple from the last 3 years. The couple was married for five years, later separated three years back. The deceased woman had filed a case against her husband, Atif Gul Misgar, son of Gul Mohammad Misgar, resident of Moominabad at civil court in kulgam, they said.

The family members of the deceased lady alleged that the reason behind the dispute between the couple was that deceased in-laws would force their son to break the wedlock and remarry another woman to have a progeny.   Atif Gul, is a businessman and owns a copper shop in the main town of Dangerpora Anantnag. The court had ordered Aatif to pay a monthly amount of Rs 3000 to his now late wife as maintenance, however, Aatif settled the issue out of court by seeking compromise and maintaining his wife at his residence in Anantnag.

While as  Aatif Gulls Mother Misra Banoo accused the brother of the deceased woman for setting their house on fire. Added that the accused poured a cane of petrol, and set their house on fire. ‘We lost everything, our house as well the inventories’’, she said. (Quoted by a local news portal “the daily kashmiriyat”)

Talking to Arising state a police official, wishing anonymity, said that there has been a rapid increase in cases of domestic violence in Anantnag District.. Added that in the last one month Anantnag witnessed three domestic violence cases which have resulted in the death of two women and the arrest of the accused.

The Moominabad incident shocked the whole district, this is the first of its kind in our locality, said Arif Rasheed a local resident of Anantnag. He said,  ‘I was literally knocked out after seeing the raged flames  that engulfed the house,the incident left me traumatized.’’

Meanwhile, talking to the Arising state a Police official said that we are investigating the case from two angles. ‘One , the conditions that led to the suicide committed by the woman and other the sudden ablaze of the house. Our investigation will continue till we figure out things’, he added.
