Senior CPI(M) Leader and former legislator M Yousuf Tarigami on Thursday condemned the ‘assault on journalists’ in Anantnag.

According to a statement issued, “Incidents like these should not go unaccounted for. Government is duty-bound to ensure an enabling environment for the free and fair functioning of the press. I, on behalf of my party, condemn the incident unequivocally and hope that strict action is taken against the erring cops behind the act. The State election commissioner should also take notice of such an appalling incident that has raised a question mark on the impartiality of the ongoing elections,” he said.
He further added that “the media persons who were performing their professional duties should not have been assaulted.”
He said that the police official involved in the act should be dealt with strictly according to the law. “The unnecessary action against the media persons is not good and the police officials must restrain themselves from carrying out such actions,” he added.
