Sopore, Dec 1: A wedding is incomplete without Mehndi or Henna on the bride’s hands and feet. Earlier, matchsticks were used to apply Mehandi on the bride’s hands and feet. Eventually, things changed and proper Mehandi artists came into the picture. Henna is an ancient art form that is still practiced today by men and women, young and old, all over the world.
Tamanna Tariq Bhat (20) sits cross-legged for hours as she applies the Mehendi creating fine lines and shapes of a bride’s hand gently squeezing the tip of the henna cone and drawing design and pattern’s free hand.
Applying Mehendi is a task that definitely invokes precision and a lot of patience. The tradition of applying Mehendi or henna is an integral part of festivals & weddings. During festive or wedding seasons, Tamanna is often packed doing the work that she loves.
Tamanna added that over the years, her artistry of henna designs have evolved. From merely doing in her notebooks while in school, and for her friends for an amount of Rs.10 to doing it as a profession now, she is proud of her profession.
Her journey as a henna artist started with the passion for learning henna designs absolutely on her own without any help from anyone or the Internet. She believes it is an inborn talent in her, which with practice has grown.
More than 10 years later, henna artistry has become an important part of Tammana’s creative lifestyle and has made her a prominent henna artist today in her hometown Sopore.
Growing up in Batpora, Sopore, she has emphasized from an early age to become an independent woman. With all the hard work she is proudly walking towards her goal.
Her beautiful works have been put up in Aesthetic Petals, a Facebook page. Definitely have a look, it will amaze you. And next time you need a henna artist, you know whom to call.
